Hatfield House 1760

Fairmount Park East, Philadelphia, PA

Built in 1760 in the Northern Liberties neighborhood of Philadelphia and operated as a boarding school from 1806 to 1824. Mr. William J. Hay bought the building and added the Greek Revival temple at the front, and perhaps the attractive porches over the two entry doors on the sides that were removed later.

Dr. Nathan L. Hatfield bought the house in 1854 and it was used as a recruiting station during the First World War. His son donated the residence to Fairmount Park in 1930 when it was dismantled and rebuilt in the park with the other historic houses in Fairmount Park.

Description

Fine example of a small 18th century residence completed circa 1760 remodeled and enlarged into a Greek Revival house in 1838. Five columned Tuscan temple front; there is no entrance doorway on this side. Entrance on the side of the house is a frontispiece with typical elements of the Classical Revival period: entablature, sidelights, transom and paneled door. The transom and sidelights have cast-metal decorative circles, bars and ovals. The lower part of the sidelights are recessed panels. The door has eight recessed panels. The windows on the front temple have entablature tops which are similar to the main doorway entablature.

Common double-hung sash windows, all with shutters of two different designs: four recessed-panels on the front, sides and first floor rear side and three raised-panels on the second floor rear side. Shutter hardware is old.

Original gable roof shelters the entire house. The temple front is sheltered by a hipped roof. A box cornice runs around the entire house. Two gabled dormers are on each side of the gable roof and have corner blocks with trim.

Interior Features

Double parlors on the first floor with Greek Revival trim including corner blocks on frames and openings. Porches on the sides of the house were removed in the 1930s when the house was moved to it’s present location at the corner of 33rd Street and Girard Avenue. The house was originally located at the corner of Hunting Park and Pulaski Avenues in Philadelphia.((HABS PA,51-PHILA,233 ))
