James Mathews is the owner of the building in the records from 1804. The Historic American Building Survey uncovered records from previous owners that date back to 1778, two years after the American Revolution.
There are two theories about how the house acquired the name “Vernon”. Now owned by the city of Philadelphia, the colonial style townhouse is now called the Vernon-Wister Mansion to honor the succeeding owners of the property.
